In the 2020s, Altron achieved global milestones, supported businesses through COVID-19, prioritized ESG initiatives, and launched Altron Digital Business. Werner Kapp became CEO in 2022, leading growth and innovation towards our 60th anniversary.
In 1965, Dr. Bill Venter founded Altron in Johannesburg, initially producing TV and radio components. Launched on April 1st, early marketing featured his sister. The company expanded nationally, focusing on local manufacturing and innovation.
In the 1970s, Altron expanded into telecommunications and consumer electronics. Under Dr. Venter, Altech was established in 1975, and Powertech in 1979, both listed on the JSE, solidifying Altron's industry presence and growth.
Altron expanded in the 1980s, forming Ventron Corporation to manage its portfolio, including Altech, Powertech, and Fintech. Altech ranked 7th on the Sunday Times Top 100 in 1981. Altron acquired Fintech in 1984 and Motorola (SA) in 1985, boosting its semiconductor capabilities. The company invested in R&D, driving technological advancements and acquiring Autopage Holdings despite economic challenges.
In the 1990s, Altron expanded into mobile communications and telecoms, formed global partnerships, and acquired USKO and Netstar. Powertech became Eskom’s sole transformer supplier. Altron also prioritized social impact and enhanced its brand presence.
In the new millennium, Altron solidified its IT services and software presence through acquisitions. USKO rebranded as Bytes Technology Group in 2000. Dr. Bill Venter became Honorary Life President in 2001, with his sons taking leadership roles. In 2004, Altron sponsored a Formula 1 two-seater event at Kyalami, reinforcing its brand presence.
During the 2010s, Altron restructured to focus on IT, security, and digital solutions. They acquired Altech, secured investment, and appointed Mteto Nyati as CEO. Altron expanded in cybersecurity, cloud, and managed services, enhancing their market presence.
